A First Grade Conspiracy...

So, yesterday I was sitting at my desk with several kids around watching me illustrate our book cover for the book my class is getting published. The girls and boys were trying make sure I heard and understood their opinions! (By the way, I am very excited we got the grant that is publishing the book and buying every first grader their own copy. Pretty awesome.) Anyways, as we were discussing what should be on the cover I over heard two boys at the writing table, about 1 foot from my table.

B.A. "... yes, but how are we going to get this past Ms. D?!?!?"
A.W. "I don't know, hide it."
B.A. "Ok.. but really, if she sees it...."
A.W. "We have to take it."
B.A. "Ok.. Here's what we do."
A.W. "Alright!"

So over hearing "how are we going to get this past Ms. D" (which is the lunch duty aid) I figured sometime serious was about to happen, so I had to ask.

Me "What are you two boys doing."
B.A. (who frustrates me daily, but can't help but adore the boy) "We want to take this (a piece of brown paper) to recess but we don't know how to get it past Ms. D!"
(Laughing on the inside.. He makes me laugh everyday.. He makes me think of what J is going to be like... and 1000% BOY.)
Me "Well B.A. IF you have to plan out how you are going to get that past Ms. D, do you think it is a good idea to even try?"
B.A. "Uhhh... ummm... Well... I.. I.... I.... ummm... Yes?!?!?!?"
Me. "No. Throw it away." (it was just a piece of brown paper.. seriously, what in the world made him want to take it to recess.. Who knows! I never know what is going on in B.A. Land.. )

  1. Oh my goodness - sounds like something some of mine would cook up. For crafts around here sometimes I have to keep them from taking stuff out of the garbage...scraps of paper, bits of thread, etc. Ack! I'd be more than happy to let them have a full sheet of paper or however much thread...why one earth they want the "bits" of it, I'll never understand :) Ah well - cute story! And funny you should say what you did, I've said something VERY similar before - if you have to sneak/hide/etc. is it really something you ought to be doing? Hmmm? :)
